The Secret Dance of the Honeybee

Edulin Children’s News · Week of 20 September 2026

When a honeybee finds a field of flowers, she flies back to the hive and does a waggle dance.

When a honeybee finds a field of flowers, she flies back to the hive and does a waggle dance. The angle of the dance tells the other bees the direction of the flowers compared with the Sun, and the length of the waggle tells how far. Scientists were amazed when they worked this out, because it shows that an insect smaller than a grape can share directions. Planting flowers in your garden helps bees a lot.
