Fibonacci Numbers in Flowers

Edulin Children’s News · Week of 5 April 2026

Look at a sunflower: its seeds spiral in two directions, and the number of spirals is usually 34 and 55, or 55 and 89.

Look at a sunflower: its seeds spiral in two directions, and the number of spirals is usually 34 and 55, or 55 and 89. These are Fibonacci numbers, where each number is the sum of the two before it: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21... Many flowers have a Fibonacci number of petals. Count the petals on the next flower you see!
