Dolphins Sleep With Half a Brain
Edulin Children’s News · Week of 10 May 2026
Dolphins need to come up to the surface to breathe, so they cannot fall completely asleep.
Dolphins need to come up to the surface to breathe, so they cannot fall completely asleep. Instead, they rest one half of the brain at a time while the other half stays awake and keeps swimming. One eye stays open, too! This lets them breathe and watch for danger even while resting. Nature has many clever ways of solving problems.
